Super Hair Mohawk

So, Danny decided he wanted to get a mohawk. First, he shaved his hair all but the middle inch and a half or so and I brought out the glue. He had tried jello before, but that hardly worked at all. This time I would use regular Elmer's Glue. However, this didn't work out too well either - not stiff enough...

Drying on the table:

After the glue had set, Danny realized that making this in the evening probably wasn't a good idea. He fell asleep at some point, and the hawk no longer stood up as well in the morning. It needed improvement before it would be stiff enough to cut into it. He was able to wash out his hair, and after a long time in the shower his hair was back to 'normal'.

Gluing the mohawk on the table worked well the first time so we used the same method in mohawk #2. This time, we decided to use wood glue in combination with Elmer's Glue to give the mohawk more strength; we used a lot of glue. After we had dried it with hair dryers for some time, I cut out the letters (MIT, after our school) and added even more glue to stiffen it up.

It worked! He was able to sleep with it still intact and sport it in class the next day. The top picture on this page made The Tech newspaper and the spotlight on web.mit.edu. Danny cut the mohawk off close to the roots and MattX put the mohawk in a frame and it is now in the kitchen of our hall - kind of weird.

Danny's note (10/14/06):

It was getting to be the dreary middle of term and I wanted to do something a bit out of the ordinary. I knew my hair had to go before I started interviewing so that gave me the chance to have some fun in between. Although I had the vague idea of cutting the letters 'M-I-T' out of the mohawk from the beginning, I didn't fully realize until I'd had Mohawk V1.0 that it was possible. I got a lot of smiles with that, a few laughs, and a few frowns. I think all my professors were good sports about it during class. One thing you don't realize before having a 13 inch mohawk is how much wind there is on an average day. I felt like a weather vane, turning my head into a strong wind for fear that it would snap the mohawk. Bavetta did an amazing job putting up the mohawk. I couldn't think of anyone better to spend 2.5 hours with while lying with my head sideways on the dinner table and waiting for the wood glue in my hair to dry.
